The Institution of Silly & Meaningless Sayings (ISMS) was founded in 1973, nationally all over the country. The ISMS is the UK’s, and possibly the world’s, foremost authority on humorous isms (see our What is an ism? page, if that's a new concept to you). As the foundation of the Institution we currently have more than 1500 genuine isms in our database. The ISMS is supported by a network of members in public service, industry, commerce and the armed forces. The ISMS web site has been operational since 2002 and is best viewed in 800 x 600 pixels and with a degree of tongue-in-cheekiness. Warning: the ISMS may contain nuts. Our mission is to seek out and record quality examples of isms, wordplay and other fun or off the wall language. Most of the isms entries in this web site were probably said involuntarily. Indeed, for a saying to qualify as a true ism it is essential that the person who made the remark suffers huge embarrassment when the error is pointed out - as of course it must be on every occasion. To ensure the widest possible access to ism-like material we provide Lynx to other appropriate wordplay and humour web sites. If you know of a suitable candidate for linking, please email us, using the link in the footer, with the details. The menu buttons at the right and below provide links to the main pages of our web site. The Site Map will help you to explore the full ISMS web site and learn more about isms, the Institution, and why we should be certified. Contact us by email if you have any suggestions for improvements or ideas for additional content. In the meantime, have fun exploring our site. |
