In a busy workplace, during an important phone call, when you're not quite sure of your ground or when you’re simply trying to sound knowledgeable, sometimes the words that come out of your mouth can make you sound like a complete idiot - generally to the amusement of your colleagues who are listening in. Members of the ISMS always listen in, that's how we get most of our isms.
Isms that we have collected come from listening to work colleagues under pressure, noting things in meetings with clients, radio and television announcements and so on, but all are genuine and have been heard at first hand (if that’s possible?).
Our isms are broadly categorised as mixed metaphors, malapropisms, attempts at using foreign phrases, the occasional spoonerism and the use of redundant words. However, many are just downright nonsense that sound correct, if said with conviction, until
they are analysed by trained professionals like we here at the ISMS.
Use this link or the side menu to find out “What is an ism?” and see six examples of the main types of isms collected by us, together with a brief analysis of each. Or dive straight in and visit our main database to view our entire collection of thousands of isms. | |
