| We receive a number of email entries for our
Spotty Ribbon Campaign and
Cliché Corner that do not easily fit into either category
and should be here? So as not to disappoint our contributors we developed this sub-section
as an added bonus.
In case you're not aware, tautology
is the name for a particular fault in expression, the needless
repetition of an idea, statement, or word (usually unintentionally).
There are common examples such as 'free gift' (if a gift is not free
then it is not a gift), the birth of a baby girl (as opposed to the
birth of an adult girl?). Many tautological expressions are clichés;
they come ready made from tired old grooves of expression because
sometimes the writer or speaker does not know the precise meaning of
a word (that's why we also have safe haven in our cliché corner
section). Tautology of a kind also happens in the redundant
expansion of abbreviations or acronyms, as evidenced by the
Redundancy section of our isms
database, for example: VDU unit, Lloyds
TSB Bank, ITU unit.
Please submit any further
tautological contributions by
email. For your convenience, new entries will be inserted at the top of the list.
