What is an ism?

Isms are the things the people really say when they open their mouths and speak without first engaging their brains. Most of the isms in this web site were probably said involuntarily. Indeed, for a saying to qualify as a true ism it is essential that the person who made the remark suffers huge embarrassment when the error is pointed out - as of course it must be on every occasion.
